Retro Summer Root Beer

Root Beer FloatFor some reason this morning the A & W Root Beer jingle is going through my head. So, go throw a mug in the freezer for 20 minutes or so. Then scoop yourself some vanilla ice cream-real ice cream-not that whipped low fat stuff-that won’t work- into it. Then…pour some root beer in, down the side of the glass. Skip that fancy overpriced all natural root beer. Get some Hires or A & W. It will taste better, like your childhood. The fancy stuff…better for straight up drinking.

Do you have a favorite summertime drink?

  1. My favorite summer drink is a Black Currant Leaf Drink. In the northern part of Sweden , we don´t have Black elder, due to too severe winters. So this is as good as Elderflower syrup. In fact, almost identical in taste.

    * 3 l (3000 ml) black currant leaves
    * 3 lemons, washed and sliced
    * 1 1/2 l (1500 ml) boiling water
    * 60 g citric acid
    * 2 l (2000 ml) sugar

    1. Dissolve sugar in boiling water.
    2. Stir until all sugar is dissolved.
    3. Cook for about 10 minutes.
    4. Add citric acid.
    5. Put leaves and lemon slices in layers into a large kettle.
    6. Pour the syrup of sugar on top and leave in a cool place for 5 days.
    7. Strain things out.
    8. Pour into plastic containers and freeze.

    To drink, put a lemon slice in a glass, add about 1/3 of syrup, and pour in water.

  2. Root Beer = DO NOT WANT

  3. Karin-my daughter is an elderflower drink ADDICT! She spent this spring in England and when I went to see her-she was all about the various elderflower sodas! I will have to give that a try.

    Liz-I am mostly anti-root beer except for maybe once a year in a root beer float.

  4. I love A and W! Remember when you went to the drive in to get it and it was mixed right there? Or is that before your time?
    Welcome to the blogroll!
