Happy May Day

May 1, 2007 by Tarrant Figlio

It is May Day! Celebrate the warmer weather and the flowers! Make a posie. Dance around a pole!

I will be back later with a recipe and some vintage fun, but technical difficulties are keeping me from scanning in the retro wonder of the day.

Also, check out the new Frugal Blogroll over there in the right sidebar. I just joined and adore some of those thrifty blogs.

In the meantime, what foods speak of spring of yesteryear to you?

Fresh strawberries, definitely. Boiled custard? Hmmm…I always think of custard as a winter thing.

This is not really boiled; if you do boil it, you will have a mess.
    Boiled Custard
    2 cups whole milk
    4 egg yolks
    1/2 cup sugar.. or less
    1 tablespoon flour
1 teaspoon vanilla or almond flavoring
    Pinch of salt
Heat the milk over medium-low heat until it just begins to bubble at the edges. Do not boil. Beat egg yolks, sugar, and flour together in a separate bowl. Add a little of the scalded milk to the egg, sugar, and flour mixture, stirring well. Add this mixture to the scalded milk, stirring constantly.DO NOT BOIL!! Cook over low heat until the mixture coats a spoon. Remove from heat. When cool, add the salt and flavoring.

oohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh like a boiled custard sauce…..ummmmmmmmmm yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm wow. Now I am plotting something to pour it over. Strawberries might just be the thing, or blueberries. Hmmm THANK YOU LIZ!

  10. Denise says:

uh you don’t like strawberries, silly.

Why don’t you just eat the custard without pouring it on anything, you know you want to!

  11. Liz says:

That’s right! Just drink it straight from the container!

  12. retrofood says:

Ok, I will skip the strawberries…though for some reason they sound good. I thought eating it straight would be too hedonistic.
