Croutons

Filed under: Breads, Other, Recipes, retro food — Retro Food

From the Modern Family Cookbook

If unsliced bread is used, cut in 3/4-inch thick slices, then in 3/4 inch strips; then cut the strips in 3/4 inch lengths (cubes). If sliced bread is used, cut slices in strips 3/4-inch wide, any length desired. Spread on a shallow baking pan or cookie sheet and brown in a moderate oven (350 degrees F.) until of the desired color, turning occasionally. They will brown more quickly and have a delicious flavor if cubes are tossed in melted butter before browning. The cubes or strips may also be fried in deep fat or pan-fried with or without butter. Pan-frying with butter is more economical if the butter is spread on the bread itself; this may be done before cutting.
